How I work
I like a good system.
I’ve worked with data for about a decade. It helps me make sense of messy problems, but I’ve never stayed inside one kind of work.
There’s something satisfying about seeing a vague problem become clear and structured. I also like figuring things out as I go. I use what I know, learn what I don’t, and see how far the idea can go.
Sometimes a project starts with a problem. Sometimes it starts with curiosity. Both are good reasons to begin.
These days most of the typing is done by coding agents, and my job is to hold them to account. Mint runs on a set of runtime invariants: every count on a receipt has to match the filesystem, and a violation is logged in production and crashes the debug build. Every number on this site is a measurement I ran on a real machine and can run again; the method is written into each post. The receipts are on the blog.
When I’m away from the desk, I’m probably out on my bike. Lately, I’ve been spending a little too much time in Anno 1800.
